On Wednesday 27 November 2013 a press conference for the media, and partners of the project CEVA (Centre of Excellence for Atherosclerosis Research) took place. This project has been one of the key mainsprings in the development of research in internal medicine and related medical and biomedical programmes at the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice in the last 5 years. Project CEVA gained subsidies through the European Union’s structural funds in the amount of almost 3.5 million Euros. Realization of the project has had a substantial effect on education and clinical practice.

Consortium CEVA was established by association of seven clinical educational bases (3 Departments of Internal Medicine, the Department of Cardiology, the Department of Pneumology, the Department of Neurology, the First Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine), and three departments of general research (the Department of Medical Biology, the Department of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Biophysics of the Faculty of Science). “A clear vision of CEVA was to improve a biomedical research in the area of atherosclerosis. We also dealt with the study of risk factors, clinical demonstration, and the treatment of atherosclerosis. It is important to realize that lives of patients with atherosclerosis are shortened mainly by complications accompanying this disease- myocardial and cerebral infarction. Therefore, we made a great effort to support activities of general and applied research, in order to reach the improvement in an early diagnosis and the treatment of atherosclerosis of the coronary and cerebral arteries, as well as the study of a risk of a sudden cardiac death and possibilities of its prevention”, said professor Ružena Tkáčová, project coordinator.
