The New UPJŠ Telescope Opening Ceremony

On Thursday, the 5th of December 2013, a new telescope of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice was put into service in the Astronomical Observatory on the Kolonica Saddle. The observation pavilion of the Faculty of Science is located in the Vihorlat Observatory in Humenné and is situated on the Kolonica Saddle in the Dark-Sky Park Poloniny, which is the area with the best enviroment for astronomical observations in Slovakia. The park was created in 2010 and the Faculty of Science is one of its signatory. The observation pavilion of the Faculty of Science was built with the resources of the European Regional Development Fund through the Operational Programme Research and Development called “Centre of Space Research: Space Weather Influences – phase two.” It is equipped with a new telescope, CCD cameras and a spectroscope worth 95-thousand €, which greatly improves the quality of the education of astronomy and astrophysics students at the Faculty of Science, and enables them to work with cutting-edge technology and take part in scientific research.
