The start of the implementation of the UrbanHist project (H2020)

The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice became one of the four recipients of the prestigious grant of the Horizon 2020 programme with the project History of European Urbanism in the 20th Century (UrbanHist) by signing the grant agreement in 19 October 2016. The extraordinary success has been achieved by the creative team of the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, which was led by the head of the department doc. PaedDr. Martin Pekár, PhD., who is also the head of the Slovak part of the project.

The consortium of the four partner universities is led by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (Germany), and it received grants for the projects Innovative Training Networks (ITN) and European Joint Doctorates (EJD) within the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA), in the priority of Excellent Science. The two other recipients of the grant are Universidad de Valladolid (Spain) and Blekinge Tekniska Högskola Karlskrona (Sweden). These four universities will manage and coordinate the activities of the other 11 partner universities from Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic and the United Kingdom within the framework of the established innovative network between 2016 and 2020. The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice will be also represented by the Institute of Geography of the Faculty of Science within this project.

The main scientific aim is a comprehensive interdisciplinary research of the development of European urbanism in the past century, which will geographically cover the entire continent and it primarily focuses on the identification and interpretation of common trends of development. One of the key elements of the innovative network will be the development of excellent doctoral studies completed by double degrees. The budget of the UrbanHist project exceeds the amount of € 3.7 million euros.

The implementation of the project starts with a planned meeting of the members of the consortium, which will take place in October 17-19, 2016 in Weimar. 15 researchers in their early stages of their academic career will be given the opportunity to join the excellent research within the UrbanHist project from spring 2017, when their three-year PhD studies with double diplomas officially start.
