Research field:  2.1.34  Linguistics of specific language groups

The Onomasiology – Word-Formation – Typology research team is renowned as a centre of onomasiological research into word-formation. Its researchers have developed and significantly elaborated on the rich tradition of Czech and Slovak morphologists (Dokulil, Horecký, Furdík, Buzássyová etc.). The top team’s research results, pioneering in many respects, have been published in prestigious international publishing houses. They cover the following areas:

  • General onomasiological theory of word-formation, mainly Stekauer 1998 (John Benjamins), Stekauer 2005b (In: Stekauer & Lieber (eds.) Handbook of Word-formation, Springer).
  • Onomasiological theory of conversion (Stekauer 1996, Peter Lang Verlag).
  • Theory of meaning predictability of novel complex words (Stekauer 2005a, John Benjamins).
  • Typological research into word-formation systems (Stekauer, Valera & Körtvélyessy 2012, Cambridge University Press).
  • Sociolinguistic aspects of complex-word formation and interpretation (Stekauer et al. 2005, Körtvélyessy 2010).
  • Integrated model of complex-word formation and interpretation (Stekauer 2016, In: ten Hacken (ed.) The Semantics of Compounding. Cambridge University Press).
  • Onomasiological theory of evaluative morphology (Körtvélyessy 2015, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Panocová 2013, In: ten Hacken and Thomas (eds.) The Semantics of Word formation and Lexicalization. Edinburgh University Press), Grandi & Körtvélyessy 2015 (Edinburgh University Press), and Gregová (2015), In: Grandi & Körtvélyessy (eds.) Edinburgh Handbook of Evaluative Morphology. Edinburgh University Press).
  • Onomasiological theory of neoclassical compounds and of borrowings (Panocová 2015, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Panocová 2016, In: ten Hacken (ed.) The Semantics of Compounding. Cambridge University Press).

All these areas of research are based on clearly defined principles of an onomasiological theory. The top team research achievements have been published in a number of monographs and research papers published by prestigious publishing houses and journals. An important part of the activities of the research team is their editorial work that has resulted in several highly influential handbooks. Furthermore, the team members participate in doctoral programs as supervisors, and publish the Erih+ SKASE Journal of Theoretical Linguistics. They have given lectures at a number of universities in Europe as well as oversees. They regularly present their achievements at international conferences and take part in organization of conferences and workshops in Kosice as well as abroad.
